Tale Of The Tape: Mya - Smooth Jones

About eighteen years ago (wow)  Mya hit the scene with her song "It's all about me" feat the Mr.Thong song himself Sisqo.  Mya came in around the time as I call the trinty was in full effect and when I say the trinity I am speaking of Aaliyah, Brandy, Monica, when they was killing the game. Mya had her own niche in the late 90's early 00's, her last major studio album was in 2003 with Moodring. Since then she released her albums through independent releases and kinda has a low profile in contrast to the begining of her career. Fast forward to 2016 Mya has released eighth full length studio album, on her own label planet 9, I took some time to listen Ms. Mya Smooth Jones album. Is this a worthy album to have? Does she bring the heat? or should we move on? Well will you have to see below and this tale of the tape:
Tale of the Tape: Mya Smooth Jones

Smooth Jones Intro:  Smooth Jones is Mya radio DJ alter ego, this intro starts off Mya speaking into the mic introducing her self as Smooth Jones, followed by some vocal harmonies from the singer herself. I like intros it sets the tone for the album. The vibe I get from this album, is that Smooth Jones is playing some R&B jams featuring Mya.

Welcome to my world:   Smooth is the tone on this track, good production it gives a spring/summertime vibe, Mya inviting a potential suitor into world of traveling and luxury. "you can be high class sitting on a boat" well alright now! What I do like about this song is that yeah she showing that she got that paper and she can take her man anywhere he wants. Kinda like songs use to be in the early 2000's when women was on the independent grind and was like baby I got it.

Hold On feat Phil Ade:   One thing about Mya is that she always work  with up and coming artist, that has been a central theme in her career. This song features Maryland artist Phil Ade and on the this track they come together to give listeners hope and never to give up on even though life can bring an everyday struggle. this is an ok song, don't get me wrong we all need daily inspriation and nothing is wrong with that. It could have been a little more wisdom dropped on the rap vocals.

Elevators Feat Smooth Jones:   Keeping up with the theme of keeping your head up, this an uptempo track has Mya letting you know that when you elevate the haters are going keep hating becuase they not rising to highest level and it don't matter cause we up here. The music production is simalar to Welcome to my world, a breezy vibe being that Mya does her some of her own production it seems to be her signature sound. This song features Smooth Jones (Mya) and what is intersting is that Smooth Jones is not a bad rapper, is not Biggie, Nas type lyrics. But it works for song.

Phya (fire): It would not be a Mya album without her letting the listners know, she knows how to put down in the bedroom and even gives a recap "I know you had your share of girls" also the opening into to "My love is like wo" of her 2003 album "Moodring". However this is good slow jam banger. This song gives me every bit of her Late 90's early 00's songs. Her love is so phya that she have her boo talking like Future (lol), what always work for Mya is her best when she is being sensual, that is her signature style.

Replay: Very high

Spoil Me: Another thing it would not be a Mya album without a little quirky vibe, in one song she is giving a suitor keys to the palace and on this song he better get it together and spoil Ms. Mya. It is an alright song for the album, like I said Mya makes quirky songs it is what she does as an artist.

Team You: In 1998 the first single was "It all about me" that was young Mya and now we have grown Mya and she letting her man she is all about  him. The production is mid tempo freshness, it has nice chill out and this song bring the album down a more slowed down tone

Replay: High

Coolin:   Mya has a soft voice and she has a tendency to sing in a whispery voice on some of her songs, and over the guitar lick, her voice is layered perfectly. Sometimes a whispery sound in songs is annoying, on this track it is not. Chilling with bae, during a summer night is the tone of this track, it works coming after team you.

Replay: High

One Man Woman (Ol Skool joint): It would not be an Mya album without her spitting game, on this track she letting this fella know she could have about three or four in her back pocket. But she chooses only one man and right now this needed in music. Also this song lives up to the title old school. It definitely has an old school feel in the production. And y'all know me I am old school music lover for life and Mya give the vibe of the music of yesterday on this track.

Replay: Strong

Circle Of Life (Ol Skool Joint) Following the theme of the old school this song takes us to the dance floor, gives a fun bouncy vibe after three back to back slow jams tracks, Mya gives a dance break, not mad at that Mya.

Replay: Moderate

Smooth Jones Afta Glow Show (Outro): So after all music Mya comes back on and reminds the listner that they are listening to smooth jones as in the radio show. Taking us down memory lane with singing lines from "For the first time" "Anatomy 101" "Full Service".  I have not heard a good outro in a while, the tone the vibe and theme make it really sounds like afta glow show is really on the radio. I would listen to it for sure, I felt like I was listening to the quiet storm

Replay: Strong

One Man Woman (Acoustic): Remix of the orginal version acoustic of one man woman, brings the album to to a close

Tale Of The Tape:

June 11th 1996 Mona Lisa released her debut 11-20-79

As I continue with my series of great albums of 1996, this album that I am featuring on this post is probably in my top 10 of  my top 100 favorite albums. I promise I will treat you all to that list one day soon, I have been mentally creating that list forever, as old albums stay the same, new albums come out so stay tuned. Anyway this album featured on today's post is an album that I still play on a regular basis to this day.

Movie soundtracks was big in the 90s, sometimes even bigger than regular albums, the Wayans brothers had this hilarious move called "Don't be a menace while drinking your juice in south central" a spoof on all the hood classic films in the 90s.  The soundtrack was even better, R&B singer Joe had one of the biggest hits that helped him become name in R&B. He had a song called "All The Things…

What's Going On?

Google Images: Devastation from Bomb Attack in Mogadishu, Somalia

I may talk about music and culture, It is my way to ease the pain with all the things I see going on in this world. But it is too much to ignore, last weekend there was bomb explosion in Mogadishu, Somalia. As of right now it has been reported that 300 lives has been lost due the terrorist attack.

I do my best to keep up with what is going on, whether it's in pop culture, local or national news. And with this recent terrorist attack. The one thing I don't see flooding up and down my time lines on my social media feed. Is  #PrayForSomalia, that is something that is very scarce across the feeds. But I bet your bottom dollar I can see the endless memes of bitches not being shit and its numerous likes.

That goes without fail, I posted a few links about this horrific incident and all I have heard is crickets. If I posted a joke and made fun of reality star. It would have been likes and comments galore. I am not tell…

1997 Part II

I was sixteen years old in 1997, music was life back then for me, and in that year I needed it more then ever, My freshmen year of high school was 1996 - 1997 and during that school year I was at a school I did not want to be at. In the city of Buffalo at that time, during 8th grade year students had to pick the top choices of the high school they wanted to go to. It was all based on grades during 7th grade year and first grade quarter of 8th grade.

Math was my weakest subject, and the schools that I chose at the time a student had to excel well in the area of math. And me not being on my A game it caused me to loose out on all of my choices of the schools I wanted to attend. So in fall of 1996 I was at my district school. While all my Jr. high friends was at the school of their choices living the high life.

I had to make a daily trip to south Buffalo, a place I did not want to be, what kept me calm to and from schoo…
